The mentoring program visited the Legacy Museum in Montgomery, Alabama. Mr Bryan Stevenson and his team have done a phenomenal job documenting slavery and lynching that took place during that era.
In October 2019, the Kings visited Maryland Shock Trauma. They learned about what can happen when you pick up a gun irresponsibly, spoke to a young man who will spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair because of poor choices, were certified in a “stop the bleed” course and gained information about career opportunities at the hospital.
Former Congressman Kweisi Mfume is running for the 7th Congressional District that is vacant due to the passing of Congressman Cummings and he recently spoke to the Kings.
Mr. Marvin McDowell from UMAR Boxing Center spoke. He had the Regional Boxing Champion and 3 other boxers accompany him. The regional champion will go to the National Boxing Tournament and hopes to qualify for the upcoming Olympics. They did brief exercises and demonstrations. These boxers emphasized to the young Kings the importance of dedication and discipline in this arena.
We were presented with an interactive workshop on “Conflict Resolution” which all of the young men enjoyed. I hope that everyone learned at least one thing from it. In this world many of us will be faced with some type of conflict, hopefully we can reflect back on this training and know how to respond. The Kings also took part in CPR training. Each young man was given a book that they can look over from time to time. This book explained what to do if an emergency should occur.
The Tour of Maryland Shock Trauma. It was an amazing and humbling tour. We got to see firsthand some of the trauma patients whose lives were being saved. The young kings had a chance to converse with the Second-in-Command Trauma Surgeon, Dr. Carnell Cooper. He shared with them some of his experiences working in Shock Trauma. We got the opportunity to talk to the pilots who flew the MEDIVAC helicopters. They then talked about different occupations within the hospital and had a rap presentation by 5th L.
Dr. Anthony Jenkins, President of Coppin State University, Retired Judge Wanda Heard, and a Washington Wizards game where the Kings got to meet the players.
Professor Larry Gibson stopped by from the University of Maryland Law School in August of 2023.
Judge Robert Murphy, Appellate Court, Maryland Supreme Court
November of 2022, Mr. Miles with Maryland Speaker of the House of Delegates, Adrienne Jones.
